Behind the silence of the landscape, destruction and extractivism

The sustainability of consumption and production practices in the Global South is obstructed by continued exploitation and pollution by corporations in the Global North. This unfair dynamic undermines the South’s efforts to achieve sustainable change, as resource exploitation and unequal economic benefits perpetuate dependency and limit opportunities for investment in more sustainable alternatives.

This is why we believe that in the European context, there is an urgent need to raise awareness of the reality of what is happening, as well as to recognize the direct responsibility for the practice of intensive natural resource extraction in our South.

Silent Colonialism

La Sur Real presents ‘Colonialismo Silencioso’ (Silent Colonialism), a space for dialogue in which three short documentaries analyse projects related to mining and extractivism.

El Cerrejón coal mine in Colombia, lithium mining in Chile, and the Mayan Train Project in Mexico, will approach these cases from a decolonial perspective to problematize the power relations between the North and the Global South, taking a historical journey from the time of colonization of AbyaYala (Latin America) to the present: Globalization, the commodification of nature, and its relationship to climate change, revealing that these ecocidal and ethnocidal power relations between the Global North and South are still in effect.
